On Monday, November 24, 2025, Brist Monico, Specialty Court Coordinator for the Veteran and Drug Courts of Shawnee County District Courts, addressed the Kiwanis Club of Topeka at our noon meeting held at the Kansas Children’s Service League. In addition to Brist, the club had one more guest interested in becoming a member, and 22 current club members (a nice turnout after a busy weekend at our Pancake Feed, Silent Auction & Bread Braid sales). Brist told us about the Drug and Veterans Court Programs including how individuals are determined to be a part of the program. We heard about the five-step program with the 180-day graduation program followed by a probation period. We also learned that some who have completed the program are now working in community areas of the program, including Valeo. The Oxford House plays a big role in sobriety of the program individuals. The Drug Court program began in 2018, and the Veterans Court program began on June 23, 2023. The Veterans program currently has seven and the Drug program runs around 35-40 (depending on funding). Those in the program must be 18 (adult) with the oldest graduate of the drug program around 63 yrs of age. Veterans must be VA Benefit eligible. Brist thanked the many organizations who assist with these programs. Our next club meeting is Monday, December 8, to be held at Kansas Children’s Service League, with Monique Vopat, Lifehouse Advocacy Center, as our speaker. Club members are reminded to bring their Salvation Army “Angel” Donations to the meeting (along with their receipt up to $50). Remember – DO NOT WRAP any presents. Place them in a plastic bag with your Angel’s card on the outside of the bag. ... See MoreSee Less
If you missed our Kiwanis Club of Topeka Pancake Feed, Silent Auction, and Bread Braid Sales this past Saturday, you missed being greeted by our own "Santa Claus" (Harold Wolgast) at the cashier's table. Harold has been working this position for a large number of years...you'll have to ask him to get an exact number, but it has been a lot. THANK YOU to everyone who worked and especially to those of you who visited, ate breakfast, and shopped at our Silent Auction and Bread Braids. You have blessed our club and given us the ability to continue to serve the youth and children of our local community. We are so grateful!!! Thank you!!! ... See MoreSee Less
