Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about our golf tournament
Q: What is Kiwanis? A: “Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to improving the world one child and one community at a time.”
Q: What type of “community services?” A: The major emphasis of Kiwanis International and the Topeka Kiwanis Club is serving the children of the world. The club supports many local youth programs in a variety of ways, including YWCA Girls on the Run, Topeka Youth Court, Salvation Army, Topeka Rescue Mission, Kiwanis Builders Clubs (French Middle Schools), Kiwanis Key Club (Seaman & Highland Park High Schools), Bringing Up Grades (BUG) Program at USD 501 Elementary Schools, Key Leader (Youth Leadership Training Program), Area High School Scholarships, TARC “Winter Wonderland” and others.
Q: Does Kiwanis support any worldwide service projects? A: Yes, Kiwanis International has taken on the Elimination Project – to eliminate MNT (Maternal Neonatal Tetanus) and work again with UNICEF to prevent the spread of tetanus to new mothers and their infants which results in painful death. Previously, Kiwanis worked with UNICEF to eliminate Iodine Deficiency Disorder (IDD) worldwide. Kiwanis raised over $100 million to defeat IDD which was the leading preventable cause of mental disabilities.
Q: Where does my entry fee go? A: The entry fee which you pay to Kiwanis for playing in the tournament is handled as follows: Most of the entry fee goes for greens, carts, lunch and driving range fees which Kiwanis pays to the Lake Shawnee Golf Course. The remaining part of your fee is divided between (1) The tournament players in the form of cash for the winning team players on the first three teams in each flight and (2) Kiwanis service programs listed above based on requests for assistance with the emphasis on youth programs. A portion of your fees along with our hole sponsorship money is put in our Kiwanis charities budget fund for our club to use to disperse to needy children’s programs.
Q: What are the “Special Events” for which prizes are awarded? A: Thanks to the generosity and support of numerous businesses, individual prizes will be awarded for each hole and team prizes of cash/other prizes will be awarded to the top 3 teams in each flight. Some include “Longest Putt,” “Longest Drive,” “Closest to the Pin on 2nd Shot,” and “Closest to the Pin” (On tee shots from the par 3s). Kiwanis has sponsored a “prize on every hole” for the past several years. Last year there was an additional cash prize offered on hole number four based on how close your tee shot was to the pin ($5.00/tee shot). We also sponsored a 50/50 raffle where half the raffle money collected was awarded to the lucky ticket holder and the remaining half of the money was given to the “First Tee” children’s charity organization.
Past sponsors and prize underwriters included: 1 Round of golf for 2 with cart at Firekeeper Golf Course (Prairie Band Casino and Resort), 2 Rounds of golf with cart for 2 at Lake Shawnee Golf Course, 2 Rounds of golf with cart at Eagle Bend Golf Course, Great Life-Shawnee Country Club round of golf for 2 with cart, Gift certificates/prizes.

Monday, July 28, our club meeting featured Dr. Nick Gardner, principal of Ross Elementary School, let us know he is now also the principal of Eisenhower Middle School. With a combined near 1,000 students, they have 180 staff members. They work hard to decrease the number of "Chronic Absenteeism" and have lowered the percentage this past year but have more to do. Nick let us know that our "Kiwanis Partnership" taught the kids how to shake hands (something rather assumed as knowledge, but is not). Robert & Jan Maxwell are the Kiwanis liaisons with Ross Elementary with other club members pitching in to help from time to time. We appreciate Dr. Gardner taking time to come speak at our club meeting. ... See MoreSee Less
Today's meeting had multiple activities happening. Of course we had our happy dollars.
Greg Sims provided an update for the recent golf tournament. Thanks to all our sponsors listed that contributed to our golf tournament.
Then we did announcements (see the attached image for upcoming activities) and we rolled into elections for 2025-2026 for both the Kiwanis Club of Topeka (Downtown Kiwanis) and the Topeka Kiwanis Foundation. Congrats to next year's leadership.
Finally, we had our guest speakers, Brian Alexander from Bartlett & West and Kate Craft from the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT), talk with us about the Polk Quincy Viaduct. Thanks for the update. ... See MoreSee Less
